I’ve been wearing mesh running hats since I was a kid trying to shield my eyes from blowing sand at the Oregon coast. Honestly not the best use case. One of those hats survived and our kids still wear it hiking and paddle boarding in Colorado. Better. And me these days: Morning run- mesh running hat. Afternoon run- mesh running hat. Taking business calls- mesh running hat. Weekends in the mountains- mesh running hat. Lazy days by the pool- mesh running hat. You get it. They’re great hats.

Rewind a bit. The kids dreamed up an active lettuce named Beatis Wattis, along with a bunch of other characters, not long after they started talking. They turned into the stars of years-long rambling stories and wild adventures. We briefly toyed with putting a giant lettuce mural on the side of our home’s garage but ultimately shelved the idea. Mostly unrelated, my go-to running hat was getting nasty around the same time. I don’t recall exactly how the leap from “put Beatis Wattis on the garage” to “put Beatis Wattis on a new hat” happened. But it did.

So here we are with an exhausted lettuce on hats. And all sorts of other characters on awesome running gear. Because we’re serious about getting outside every day. But we’re not that serious.
